SCARF and CRS Partnership
The Schizophrenia Research Foundation (SCARF) has partnered with Catholic Relief Services (CRS) to provide critical psychosocial support to victims of the 2024 landslides and floods in Wayanad. This initiative focuses on training Barefoot Counsellors (BFCs) to deliver culturally sensitive support.
From October 22-26, six mental health professionals from SCARF conducted a five-day training program across three locations in Wayanad: Sulthan Bathery, Manathawadi, and Meppadi. This session benefited 150 BFCs. To ensure sustained impact, nine additional days of follow-up training are scheduled for the upcoming months. This comprehensive approach will empower BFCs to provide long-term support to affected communities.

TRAINING OF SELF HELP GROUP MEMBERS IN TAMIL NADU
In 2019, SCARF along with the Tamil Nadu Women’s Development Corporation and Institute of Mental Health began training of SHG members on mental health. This enabled them to identify early symptoms of mental distress and refer them to the nearest mental health facility. They were also able to do some basic counselling. This programme had to be stopped after the COVID pandemic.
Now in October 2024, this has been revived and will cover all the districts in Tamil Nadu.
